The wind and rain did some damage to the hollyhocks. They were over head high. Some are still standing, but some are leaning down. I am impressed with these plants.

Goof!

Yesterday my fire stalled when I tried to publish. I kept clicking on dismiss and publish. Finally I shut down the fire and restarted it. It had published the post four times on google plus. I think the game I downloaded may be at fault.

Mint

Some of the weeding I'm doing is getting mint away from the flower bed. The mint venturing toward the yard and path if fine. The lawnmower and walking by it is nice. But I don't want it to escape into my roses. So I potted a sprig and took it to the hospital. I gave it away and have four more requests.

Happy Memorial Day

Federal Holidays are observed by the post office,  and government agencies, but not by everybody. So I looked at the most recent bill to decide if I should drag the garbage can out to the street today. The bill said it would pick up Monday's trash on Tuesday. I was pretty pleased with myself for doing that. Larry said it was next month. So then we had a short discussion about whether today was Memorial Day or not. If so, trash would be picked up tomorrow. We decided that the calendar was right and today trash would not be picked up.

Playing

I downloaded the free game Township. I've played most of the day. I don't know a lot about it but that hasn't discouraged me. It is more fun than mah jong to me.

Rainy Day

The weather  featured thunder and rain today so no painting or gardening just cooking and eating. OK day.

Not Finished

I didn't like the way it looked with the ivory paint so I tried this red. It still looks bad. I'm not sure what I'll try next. Paint is pretty magical to me, but this spell didn't work.

Hollyhocks

As the hollyhocks open, they form a column of blooms. These are very double. A gorgeous butterfly was on a bloom, but flew before I could get close enough for a picture.

Root Beer Cream Slush

I froze noncarbonated diet root beer in ice trays. Then I fed the cubes into an ice shaver machine. I poured carbonated root beer over the shaved ice and added a splash of half and half. This makes a delicious low carb treat.

Today's Day Lily

Every morning one of the first things I do is check to see what is blooming. I remember thinking all day lilies were orange and not liking them. There are a lot pof beautiful ones and deer don't eat them.

Second Day Lily

This is the second clump of day lilies that will bloom this season.

Hearing Problem

I walked to the parking lot with a friend. As we neared her car, I said it sounded like her car was running. It was and had been for the two hours she had been inside. She might need a hearing aid because she didn't hear her car running as she walked away from it.

Bluegrass

Larry's mom had bluegrass, but all of hers were blue. We have blue and white ones but both remind me of  her.

Day Lilies

These are the first day lilies to bloom in our yard every year.

New Hummingbird Feeder

Larry put hanging baskets with pink petunias on two of his hummingbird feeders. Then he bought a double hanging hummingbird feeder to stick in the flower bed. I asked why he put the feeders down there and he said because of the hanging baskets. He evidently didn't catch the part where I'm going to have to take care of them even when he handed me a feeder and asked me to hang it. It isn't a big deal, but to put something out knowing he expects me to take care of it seems rude to not ask me first.

Chair

The physical therapist said recliners and couches aren't good for my back. Do you want me to bring a different chair in? No, I'll just sit in yours.

More Hollyhocks

In additionally to the deep red hollyhocks, today very double white ones opened and a pastel pink one.

Volunteer Disadvantage

It is tough to sit right by all this candy while I volunteer!

Dogs

I'm not crazy about days, but a neighbor wanted me to let her days out in the morning and back inside in the evening. Then I was to give them a treat. The big one scarfed her treat down and then the little dog's treat. The next day I let the little dog in first so she got her treat. The big dog was there first and the little one is pretty timid. Or she could be embarrassed about her name...Blossom.

Day Lilies and Daisies

These are just starting to bloom. The irises are almost finished. The columbines are totally finished, but I haven't dead headed them because I want them to go to seed.

Hollyhocks

We've never grown hollyhocks before. We planted these last year but they didn't bloom. This year we've been anxiously waiting for the blooms to start opening. Finally we have a couple open. They are really pretty. We don't know if they are all going to be the same color or not.

Small Lilies

These little lilies are just starting to bloom. They are low growing and require no care.

Ice

I like shaved ice. I found this on Amazon. I used it tonight for the first time. The ice was good. I poured diet root beer syrup over it to see if it made a root beer snow cone. It was too strong. I'll enjoy playing with flavors.

Bags

Today I put hooks on the wall to hang our bags from. Up until now, we just handed the purchased items to the customer. Our sale on Friday went really well and the bags arrived in time for our sale. We just about emptied our stock, even from storage. And we got a new volunteer.

Little Gem Magnolia

Our magnolias ate starting to bloom. Some of the huge ones I've seen are already festooned with blooms, but ours ore just starting.

More Irises

The irises are still beautiful. Every morning I look to see what is blooming. Irises, daffodils, and day lilies are the easiest things to grow. Well, monkey grass is easy, but not spectacular.

Happy Mother's Day!

It was a nice day. The kids called, the weather was perfect, and I worked with my flowers. Larry made jambalaya and cleaned up afterwards. Really good day!

Porch

Instead of three chairs, we now have six on the front porch. One more table for the far end is my next plan.

Finished Second Rocker

I'm glad to be finished painting these rocking chairs. When I'm sure the paint is hardened, I'll use the exterior high gloss spray.

Friday, May 12, 2017

Why?

Why do you turn that lamp on every day?I think it is beautiful. It uses electricity. I pay the power bill.

Second Rocker

This is the second rocker. Maybe tomorrow I'll finish painting it. I wonder if the cord is OK to paint.

Red Amaryllis

The red and white amaryllis came from Larry's mother via his aunt. This red one is from a cousin. They are winter hardy in Grand Bay, Alabama. Here in Tennessee, Larry puts them in the cellar over the winter. This past fall he planted a clump next to the house on the east side. It survived and put up leaves, but no blooms this year.

Rocker

This rocker is totally painted now. It had to be sanded first. It probably needs a second coat, but it was a serious pain painting all those slats and spindles.

What's Today?

Today isn't Thursday. I got to the hospital late because I seriously thought it was Thursday.

Wildlife

I planted flowers yesterday and replanted them today. Some idiot animal dug some of them up. It has happened before and I thought it was because I had dug in blood and bone meal around the holes but this spring I just planted angelwing begonias, marigolds, and roses that got dug around. Some of the marigolds didn't survive the experience.

Fountain

I found all the pieces and got it put together. It works. It took a while to clean it up and find the extension cord. There were a couple more snags, but it is working now.

Amaryllis

Larry keeps the amaryllis bulbs in the cellar during the winter. Then in the spring he brings them out. They shoot up greenery and bloom after about a month.

Fixed!

This plate was on upside down. I kept locking myself out when I nudged the lever to get out with my hands full. I was going to glue the lock in place but Larry said it was upside down. We have three of those storm doors and the other two had the lock knob under the handle. So today I took it apart, turned it over, and put the lever on the inside. Then I put the screws back in. It feels good to fix something.

Learning

My cordless, battery weed whacker just stopped working. I was concerned that I'd managed to tear it up the second day. I couldn't see anything wrong with it so I switched out the battery and it worked! It didn't get weaker and weaker. It was running full strength and then it stopped.
I finished today's list except I didn't spray the hybrid tea roses.  Tomorrow's list will start with that.

Why Food?

My digital frame has a ton of pictures on it. Larry asked why I have pictures of food on it. He likes our travel pictures, family pictures, plants and trees. He likes our craft pictures. The idea that food preparation takes time and interest escapes him. If I make something, it has value to me. He really doesn't get it that a bag of bugels has no interest. I've never taken a picture of a bag of chips.

New Weed Whacker

Ha! Cordless. No pull rope. Light. I can use it without someone starting it for me. I even did the little assembly required. The battery was difficult to seat properly, but I'm pretty sure I can do it next time.

Manners Lesson

We get calls asking for Larry. If the person identifies himself as a person Larry might want to talk to, I hunt him up. Mike called and asked to speak to Larry. I asked why and he said because he wanted to talk to him. I severed the connection. He called back and explained that hanging up on him was rude. Entitled little twerp. Trying to rip somebody off isn't rude? Calling somebody who isn't a possible customer happens. Calling them twice is a waste of time and that person may not be smart.

A Day Without Drama

I'm waiting for a day without drama. It wasn't today. The truck got a flat tire. AAA had some bizarre, complicated suggestion for helping with the problem. Larry was irate and will probably drop his membership. He then told me to take care of it so I called the co-op. They sent a nice young man out who found a screw in the tire and repaired it.

Nathan Lowell's Latest Book

I just finished To Fire Called, Nathan Lowell's latest book in the Solar Clipper Series. I got it in Kindle form but will also get it in audio when it becomes available. It was a drizzly gray day, perfect for reading a new book by a good author.

Peonies and Roses

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle is an invasive weed in the south. I've tried to keep it away, but there is so much of it growing wild that the air is perfumed with it. It doesn't make me want to grow it on purpose, but it is all right to enjoy the benefit of the wild fragrance.

Garlic

Well, three bulbs of garlic and some asparagus was today's harvest. It's supposed to rain soon so the asparagus needed to be cut while I wouldn't have to walk in ankle deep mud.

Windy

There was stuff I intended to do today in my flowers, but it was too windy. Fifty degrees isn't a bad temperature unless the wind is awful.
