Hummingbirds Mostly Gone

Larry had four hummingbird feeders and lots of hummingbirds earlier. They are mostly gone now so he just has one feeder still up. I've started filling plugs with potting soil so I can take cuttings. It's fall so even though the plants are lush and beautiful, their days are numbered so I have to start my cuttings for next spring.
I didn't save cuttings of the impatiens but relied on seeds. They get started slower than cuttings, but they soon catch up and it is much easier to toss seeds than to plant cuttings I've rooted.
I'll have to take cuttings of the angel wing begonias and coleus for next year.

Butterfly with Bee Balm

I told the woman at the nursery I wanted perennial plants that bees and butterflies would like. She obliged me and I came home and planted them. I didn't pay much attention to what the stuff was, but this is very enthusiastic and makes distinctive blooms so I looked it up in my herb book. Bee balm. Hummingbirds like it, too.

95 Pounds of Sugar

Larry said he has used 95 pounds of sugar for hummingbird food so far this season.  He said he used 115 pounds last year.  We aren't to the end of the hummingbird season so I think we have more hummers this year.  We also have flowers they flit around.

Relegated to the Back Porch

I was pacing on the front porch when my husband pointed out that every time I pranced by a hummingbird feeder the hummers were disturbed.  He said it would be better if I walked on the back porch.  I knew it disturbed them but didn't care all that much.  He said they should attack me and I'd go away.  So I picked up the fly swatter and just looked at him.  Then I moved to the back porch.
I like nature just fine, but it's still mine.
